Dated, builder-grade kitchen undergoes $80k renovation
Traffic flow is paramount in kitchen design. A poor layout can make mealtime a logistical nightmare, with family members bumping into each other and narrow doorways separating the cooking and eating areas. When Andrea Colman, principal of Fine Finishes Design, first set eyes on this early-2000s kitchen with an alarming amount of brown ceramic tile, she knew that beyond updating the tired finishes, the floorplan needed to function for her clients and their three young children. With a three-month renovation timeline and a budget of $80,000, Colman got to work designing the kitchen of their dreams, complete with ample storage, a fresh color palette and streamlined set-up.

Seamlessly woven into its elegant interiors, the Innovation Suite offers futuristic technology in every nook and cranny for an unmatched modern living experience. Whether you’re prepping dinner in the kitchen or stepping into the shower, this suite’s integrated technology provides comfort and convenience, from a built-in voice control system to touchless plumbing fixtures. Technology doesn’t mean sacrificing style though — Tridel’s Innovation Suite showcases warm, bold design, highlighted by herringbone wood floors, marble surfaces and panoramic views of the city skyline through ceiling-high windows. Tridel’s Vice President of Marketing, Samson Fung, and Director of Innovation and Sustainability, Adrian Wang, gave Livabl a guided tour of this one-of-a-kind residence to discover the future of luxury condo living.

This kitchen remodel kept the existing layout but leveled-up its style and functionality
If you’ve ever endured a kitchen remodel while living in your house, you know just how emotionally taxing it can be. Ordering takeout seven nights a week and discovering construction dust in every nook and cranny isn’t for the faint of heart. To minimize disruption to her client’s daily life, interior designer Cynthia Soda took a strategic approach to this Toronto kitchen remodel, opting to maintain the original layout and laying new tile over the existing floors. The end result is a brighter, more functional space featuring mixed metal finishes and state-of-the-art appliances.

An $800k remodel gave this family a forever home
Our dream home isn’t always the one we buy. Sometimes, it's the one we create. For this family of four, living in the Forest Hill neighborhood of Toronto ticked all of the boxes — it was close to downtown, reputable schools and outstanding amenities. Packing up and moving to a more spacious abode, however, would have meant inevitable renovations to achieve the level of customization they were looking for, plus moving expenses. Instead, they opted to stay put and remodel their century-old home right down to the foundation. The end result is a bigger, brighter and more functional home, with added depth and width to the floorplan. The space has been completely customized to fit their needs — from an open glass staircase to an abundance of built-ins, the home marries family-oriented practicality with unequivocal style. Andrew Black, partner at Alair Homes, walks us through the physical transformation of this property from a simple semi-detached to a stunning forever home.

An oak-all-over 80s kitchen gets a timeless remodel
Kitchens, just like every other room in our homes, are susceptible to changing design trends. One year it’s all about poured concrete countertops and the next it’s leather drawer pulls. But kitchen remodels are an expensive undertaking, costing anywhere from $15,000 to well over $30,000 — sometimes it’s best to keep it classic with a design that will stand the test of time. Interior decorator Kendra Bester considered the timelessness of every element in her client’s kitchen remodel, right down to the hardware. What was once a dated 80s kitchen with oak cabinets and unsightly tile flooring is now a bright, all-white space with functional features for a modern family.

This punchy purple nursery has the best wallpaper
Selecting the color scheme for a nursery can be daunting. Should you choose a white backdrop and bring in pops of color through accessories or go all out with brightly painted walls? Designer Shauna Walton opted for a bit of both when creating this adorable nursery for her clients and their daughter.
While shopping for furniture, Walton came across an upcycled area rug in a brilliant shade of purple. She used this as her jumping off point, pairing it with a kaleidoscope-inspired wallpaper in the crib nook. The space is girly and playful, but nearly everything in it can be easily updated if the child grows tired of purple.

A pastel blue and brass laundry room you’ll actually want to spend time in
Laundry rooms are often hidden behind closed doors for good reason. On the design side, the bulky appliances leave little to be desired. And you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who actually enjoys doing the dreaded chore the room is named after. In this video, interior decorator Kendra Bester shows us how to design a space that can support the functionality of your whole house and make laundry day a little more enjoyable. Happy folding!

Tour a modern laneway house that shows the potential of your own backyard
Laneway houses have been gaining traction in Toronto ever since the City passed regulations last summer allowing homeowners to convert garages and transform unused space into suites and private homes. Increasing the supply of housing will ease Toronto’s tight rental market and, ideally, improve affordability. Laneway houses also pose the perfect opportunity to design innovative spaces that will bring character to our streets. We have architect Craig Race to thank, whose company, Lanescape, wrote the laneway housing policy. Here, Race shows us an 1,800-square-foot laneway house that he designed before the laneway program was put in place. This modern, industrial, two-bedroom space houses a growing family in the east end, and helped pave the way for many laneway houses to come! Curious to see what the inside of a laneway house looks like? Considering building one yourself? Don’t miss these tips from Craig Race and Emmanuel Belliveau, a designer who specializes in laneway housing.

This modern master bathroom is surprisingly kid-friendly
Designer Cynthia Soda’s master ensuite bathroom is reminiscent of a five-star hotel. With a steel-framed shower enclosure, custom floating vanity and deep soaker tub, you would assume the sumptuous space is strictly off-limits for her four kids — but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Soda designed the master bathroom with her kids in mind, choosing a sliding glass door to prevent it from slamming shut and a “back-to-wall” bathtub that keeps puddles from accumulating in hard to reach places. The modern and minimal space is aesthetically pleasing to adults, and yet super-practical for bathing young kids.

5 essential home staging tips
When Red Barrinuevo is done staging your house, you may be tempted to take the for sale sign off the lawn and stay. But alas, the goal is not to fall in love with your old house but rather to sell it faster — and for top dollar. The Principal Designer of REDESIGN4MORE in Toronto did just that with this luxury suite in the Four Seasons Residences in Yorkville, listed for over $2 million. Prior to working his magic, the condo had been sitting on the market, deterring homebuyers with oversized, dated furniture that didn’t match the price point. By decluttering and introducing modern, bright furniture and decor Barrinuevo was able to help buyers visualize their lives in the condo. In this video, Barrinuevo shares 5 essential home staging tips. Follow his expert advice to elevate your interiors — whether you’re looking to sell or not.

Builder-basic penthouse undergoes $150K renovation
Home renovations are often focused on maximizing returns. And while the payoff can be significant, sometimes the best reward of all is simply enjoying your newly upgraded home. Condo owners Romey and Michelle Halabi turned to interior designer Karin Bennett to lead the full-gut renovation of their two-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse in Toronto’s trendy King West neighborhood. Here Bennett takes us on a tour of the open-concept kitchen, living and dining space, as well as the guest bathroom.
This small suburban backyard was transformed into a verdant oasis
Stepping into designer Jackie Morra’s backyard feels like ditching the suburbs for the country. You’re instantly greeted by the sounds of a trickling stream and bees buzzing from one flower to the next. But it wasn’t always this way — when she and her husband bought the house, the backyard was typical of most new-builds with a 12x12-foot deck and no shade in sight. Over the years, she has transformed the backyard into a flourishing and functional space for relaxing, dining and entertaining. Discover how she designed the backyard to suit her family’s lifestyle and get her need-to-know container gardening tips.

An HGTV designer’s living room gets a Scandi-style makeover
When you’re an interior designer, your own home is never quite “finished.” There’s always a shelf to restyle, furniture to rearrange or an accent chair to reupholster. According to Home to Win star Jo Alcorn, there was nothing wrong with her former living room, per say, it was just due for a makeover.
